Mr. Nguyen Minh -Provincial Commissioner, Vice Chairman of People's Committee of Binh Thuan province; Mr. Dinh Huu Phi - Director of the National Office of Intellectual Property and leaders of the Departments: Science and Technology, Industry and Trade, Agriculture and Rural Development, Provincial Farmers Association, Binh Thuan Cooperative Union, Binh Thuan Dragon Fruit Association; business representatives; representatives of enterprises and cooperatives that are producing and trading dragon fruits in the province attended this conference.

At this event, Mr. Dinh Huu Phi, Director of the National Office of Intellectual Property, awarded the "Binh Thuan Dragon fruit" Geographical Indication Protection in Japan to the Binh Thuan Dragon Fruit Association.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Dinh Huu Phi emphasized: “The process of registering the geographical indication of Binh Thuan dragon fruit in Japan had encountered many difficulties and seemingly insurmountable challenges. However, under the close management and direction of the Leaders of the Ministry of Science and Technology, on October 7, 2021, the Binh Thuan dragon fruit was granted a certificate of protection by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries with registration number 110. This is the second geographical indication of Vietnam protected in Japan after Luc Ngan lychee.  The successful protection of a geographical indication is the well-deserved result that we have achieved after countless challenges, but the use and management of this geographical indication by the legal provisions of Japan is also a huge challenge, and requires the initiative, positivity, and efforts of agencies and departments of Binh Thuan province, especially of the Binh Thuan Dragon Fruit Association - the owner of the Diploma of Protection of Geographical Indications of Binh Thuan dragon fruit in Japan. With the success of dragon fruit, the Provincial People's Committee needs to direct departments, agencies, and sectors to urgently register for the protection of key products with specific characteristics of the province in foreign markets.”

Also at the announcement conference, leaders of Binh Thuan Department of Science and Technology presented some methods to use geographical indications and some legal provisions of Japan after geographical indications are protected. In addition, the Conference also consulted the presentations proposing solutions to effectively exploit the geographical indications of the leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Department of Industry and Trade of Binh Thuan province.

Speaking at the announcement conference, the Chairman of Binh Thuan Dragon Fruit Association - Mr. Vo Huy Hoang said, right after the GI of Binh Thuan dragon fruit was protected in Japan, a Japanese company contacted the Association about importing Binh Thuan dragon fruit.

At the end of the announcement conference, Mr. Nguyen Minh gave directions for the effective use and management of Binh Thuan dragon fruit geographical indications.
