Geographical Indication Protection of “Phú Yên” for Lobster
On 05 November 2020, Viet Nam Intellectual Property Office has issued Decision No. 4414/QĐ-SHTT on granting Geographical indication registration certificate No. 00087 for “Phú Yên” lobster. People’s Committee of Phú Yên province is the organization in charge of managing this GI.
Lobster production in Phú Yên started from 1990. In this period, people living near ponds and the bay mostly fished natural maritime products. According to Research Institute for Aquaculture No. 3, Phú Yên coastline is abundant with lobster. This is also the first province that used underwater posted nets to cultivate lobster. In 1996, most lobster producers have switched to underwater cages to cultivate lobster. From the success of this method, the quantity of lobster in Phú Yên have risen continuously. So far, the province has over 2,200 lobster producers with nearly 35,000 commercial lobster cages, with the yearly yield of over 150 tons, resulting in a 3 trillion Dong revenue. Lobster production in Phú Yên have brought a significant economic benefits to fishermen, contributing to the economic development of the province. In the lobster development plan to 2020 with orientation towards 2030, Phú Yên shall become the province with the largest cage volume of the country.
Phú Yên lobsters have blue-green colour with two white cheek spikes. A lobster will be harvested when the weight reaches 0.7, the meat muscles are firm, the meat percentage is 61.19 to 64.30 %, roe percentage is 0.53 to 0.63%, water content is 68.99 to 71.82%, raw protein content is 19.95 to 21.37%, raw lipid content is 2.38 to 2.62%, Omega 3 content is 0.67 to 0.69 g/100g, Omega 6 content is 0.15 to 0.18 g/100g, Calcium content is 59.62 to 60.72 mg/100g, Phosphorus content is 292.53 to 318.66 mg/100g, Sodium content is 235.37 to 238.63 mg/100g, Potassium content is 300.47 to 306.42 mg/100g.

Phú Yên is a coastal province of the Southern Central region with a 189 km long coast line. Thanks to the suitable natural conditions, the area of lobster cultivation of Phú Yên province is the largest in the country. Phú Yên coast line has many mountain strips projecting into the sea, forming straits, bays and ponds. The lobster cultivation areas in Phú Yên province are Xuân Đài bay, Vũng Rô bay and Cù Mông pond which are dull bays, covered by near shore islands and peninsulas and capes such as Mái Nhà island, Hòn Chùa island, Vụng Trích cape, Diên Ông cape, and Nước Giao cape. Therefore, these areas are not influenced by wind, resulting in consistent water quality and temperature, highly suitable for aquacultural cultivation. Stream speed in Phú Yên province is fairly high at 50 to 60 m/s from December to February of the next year during the Northeastern monsoon, and 30 to 50 m/s during the Southwestern monsoon. As such, the water is well circulated, abundant in oxygen as well as washing out wastes from cultivation activities. Average seawater temperature is 27.9 to 30,7ºC, surface temperature in the summer is 28 to 29°C, and 24.2 to 25.5ºC in the winter. The living environment of lobsters in Phú Yên has the pH level of 7.5 to 8,1 and the salinity of 30.3 to 32.3 ‰. Thanks to the clear water of Phú Yên lobster cultivation area (up to 36 to 41 cm), the colour of Phú Yên lobster is brighter than those of other areas. Moreover, criteria such as: dissolved oxygen of 6.03 to 6.35 mg/l; chemical oxygen demand of surface level at 3.43 to 4.43 mg/l, of cage level at 3.7 to 4.85 mg/l; biological oxygen demand of surface level at 1.67 to 2.19 mg/l, of cage level at 2.12 to 2.23 mg/l; NO2- content of surface level at 0.003 – 0.004 mg/l, of cage level at 0.0033 to 0.0053 mg/l; NO3- content of surface level at 1.02 to 1.54 mg/l, of cage level at 1,06 to 1,87 mg/l; PO43- content of surface level at 0.12 to 0.16 mg/l, of cage level at 0.14 to 0.19 mg/l are favourable elements for the development of lobster.
Additionally, the geographical area is a open area with many types of lifeform, including 53 types of phytoplankton, 51 types of zooplankton, 32 types of benthos with a variety of algae and microalgae. It is a favourable condition for marine lifeforms which are food sources for the lobsters.
Along with the advantages in natural conditions, Phú Yên is a province with rich history of cultivating lobsters. The local fishermen have rich experiences in choosing cultivating area, feeding timing and techniques, preventing diseases, etc. which hightens the quality of Phú Yên lobsters, make them attractive to consumers.
