On January 19, 2023, the Director of the National Office of Intellectual Property issued Decision No. 39/QD-SHTT on the granting of a Geographical Indication Registration Certificate No. 00126 for the "Quang Tri" Vang tea product. Quang Tri Department of Science and Technology is the organization managing this GI.
“Quang Tri” Vang tea is associated with the spiritual name “La Vang”. Since ancient times, La Vang is a remote mountainous area with many "la vang" plants which has been used as a herb by the people of Quang Tri province for a long time. Currently, there are many Vang tea products on the market, but those that are processed from the Vang tea tree grown in Quang Tri are known by many consumers throughout Vietnam and around the world. With the characteristics of the land with a harsh climate, the Vang tea tree in Quang Tri has been evaluated and proven to be a good medicinal herb through clinical trials that nature has bestowed. Quang Tri tea is produced in three products, dried Vang tea, soluble Vang tea, and Vang tea poultice. Solute tea
Quang Tri dried Vand tea has a slightly pungent aroma, light yellow color when mixed with water; a Glucoside ratio of 0.62 to 0.70 %, a Coumarin rate of 0.11 to 0.19%, a Flavonoid content of 674 to 683 ppm, Saponin content of 76 to 87 ppb, and Antharanoid content from 112 to 120 ppm.

Quang Tri soluble tea
The geographical condition of Quang Tri’s Vang tea production area is relatively harsh, however, these conditions are suitable for the accumulation of Glucosite, Flavonoid, Coumarin, Saponin, Antharanoid, Rutin compounds of the tea tree. The geographical area has low hilly topography, the altitude is from 50 to 250 m above sea level. The annual average temperature of the geographical area is 25°C, the annual average temperature range is 7°C, and the annual average total sunshine hours is 1,848 hours/year. The average annual rainfall is from 2,000 to 2,800 mm, nearly 70% of which is concentrated in 3 months (September - November).
To produce Quang Tri’s Vang tea products, the locals only use the leaves and branches of Vang tea trees which are propagated by cuttings in the geographical area. When harvesting, people only collect the old leaves and the old leaves, do not collect the young leaves, and must ensure that there is no rain. Therefore, Quang Tri’s Vang tea is harvested only once a year, from April to August to avoid the rainy season. In addition, at this time, the raw material area of Quang Tri is under the influence of hot dry wind, so it is very convenient to dry the raw materials.
In the production process of Quang Tri’s Vang tea, the raw materials will first be washed and chopped. For dried tea, raw materials will be dried until the moisture content is lower than or equal to 12%. For soluble tea, the raw materials will be put into a vacuum microwave system for extraction, concentration, vacuum circulation, and drying. For high quality tea products, raw materials will be cooked with clean water at the rate of about 2 liters of water / 1 kg of raw materials, remove the residue and concentrate the solution at a temperature of 80-100oC, then mold or cut pieces. All Quang Tri’s Vang tea products are packaged in geographical areas.
The geographical area of Quang Tri’s Vang tea production includes communes, wards, and towns in Quang Tri province as follows:
- Communes of Vinh Chap, Vinh Long, Vinh Khe, Vinh Ha, Vinh Thuy, Vinh Son, and Ben Quan town of Vinh Linh district;
