On the morning of September 09, 2014, in cooperation with the EU-ASEAN Project on the Protection of Intellectual Property Rights (ECAPIII), the National Office of Intellectual Property of Viet Nam (NOIP) organised the International Geographical Indications Exhibition 2014 in Ha Noi.

Attending the Opening Ceremony, there were Mr. Tran Van Tung, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology; Mr. Ta Quang Minh, Director General of NOIP; Ignacico de Medrano Caballero, Director of ECAP III Project; representatives from the Delegation of the European Union to Viet Nam, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the Food and Algriculture Organization (FAO), ASEAN countries, leadership of provincial Departments of Science and Techonology; representatives from associations and producers of products bearing geographical indications throughout the country, as well as representatives from press and media agencies.
The Exhibition was held in order to raise public awareness of geographical indications as well as enhancing images and trade value of products bearing geographical indications of Viet Nam and other countries in the ASEAN region.
At the Exhibition, there were approximately 70 booths introducing local specialities of Viet Nam and other ASEAN Member States (AMSs), such as Phu Quoc fish sauce, Phuc Trach grapefruit, Tan Cuong tea, Hue palm-leaf conical hat, etc. from Viet Nam; natural algae from Myanmar, coffee from Lao, peppers and palm sugar from Cambodia, silk from Malaysia and frozen lamb from Brunei Darussalam.
In the Opening remark, Mr. Tran Van Tung, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology emphasized that geographical indications protection has developed with high speed and become an important instrument for trade, agriculture development, and traditional secret preservation as well as of the development of value chain, product promotion and tourism growth.
In Viet Nam, there are over 900 local specialities having the potential of being protected under geographical indication mechanism, out of which 38 products are registered; many other local specialities are protected in forms of collective marks and certification marks domestically and internationally.
The Exhibition lasted two days from September 09 to 10, 2014./.
